Learning Strategies to Strengthen Reading and Writing

BY: Grethel Halftermeyer

How can you improve students’ spelling skills? How can you improve their reading and writing skills? In an effort to answer these questions, Fabretto teachers have created more than 40 learning strategies and routines focused on improving the quality of education and to solve problems related to literacy.

The strategies are made up of different playful learning activities that focus on the protagonism of children as well as their parents´ involvement in the learning process. The activities are flexible and can be replicated in different contexts, both in the classroom and at home.

The project highlights the important role of rural teachers in the education and development of the communities we serve and is the result of the experiences, challenges, and training courses in which they participated throughout the “We read and write because we like it” project, which was implemented in partnership with Strachan Foundation and Patricia Price Peterson.

These innovative strategies can be recreated even with few resources. For example: “The Train of Knowledge,” an activity that strengthens the development of fluency and vocabulary through the construction of sentences with words that are placed in train wagons made out of paper or recycled materials. Without a doubt, these strategies are a dynamic way of teaching and learning.
