Rural Students and Teachers Travel to US

BY: Diana Corrales

Today, Fabretto students and teachers are traveling to the United States as the second half of an exciting exchange program to teach life lessons and wellness through sports. This initiative was a result of partnerships with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, National 4-H Council, and the U.S. Department of State’s SportsUnited division. In April, the first phase of the program trained teachers and students in sports programs and positive youth development in Nicaragua.

Twenty exemplary Nicaraguan students and six teachers are making their first trip to the U.S. for the second phase of the exchange. The delegation represent 4-H clubs throughout the communities we serve including San José de Cusmapa, Las Sabanas, and Somoto. Padre Fabretto began inaugural 4-H programs in Nicaragua in the 1980’s before the war. Over the past several years, we have returned to these roots to relaunch 4-H in the communities that we serve, integrated into our Rural Secondary Education (SAT) program.

The delegation will participate in National 4-H Council and CRSF Youth Leadership Camps including Ripken Foundation’s annual baseball camp in Aberdeen, MD. During their trip, the students will join Alliance to End Hunger, National 4-H Council, and Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation for a special panel discussion on “The Role of Youth in Global Food Security Solutions.”  The panel will offer first hand perspective on food security and youth empowerment in rural communities, as well as immediate outcomes, conclusions, and potential next steps.
