Release of the inspiring documentary “Chico’s Story”

BY: Elena Aldecoa

This moving film about a young Fabretto teacher shares the great obstacles that he has overcome and serves as a testimony to his determination and strength.

The film tells the story of the life of Francisco Moncada, known to family and friends as “Chico,” a teacher in Fabretto’s primary enrichment program in the rural community Las Jaguas, San José de Cusmapa. Chico was born with a congenital condition that affected the development of his arms and legs, but he has not allowed his phsyical limitations to hold him back.

Chico lives in an isolated rural Nicaraguan community with no access to electricity or running water. Although the nearest formal high school is two hours away, thanks to Fabretto’s rural secondary education program, Chico was able to graduate with a high school diploma. Today, he is an exemplary teacher in Fabretto’s primary enrichment program. Despite facing severe physical challenges, Chico has become a local hero and an inspiration for his students and his community.

This documentary was filmed by Guatemalan Eduardo Spiegler, a filmmaker, photographer, and editor who has been recognized for his work in documentary film, including Difusores Acústicos (Best Educational Documentary, Festival Icaro 2005) and Algunas Dimensiones de Efraín Recinos (Best Documentary, Central American Festival 2010).

Eduardo reflected, “Meeting Chico in the community Las Jaguas was an experience that filled me with enthusiasm and motivated me to support education and development in Nicaraguan communities.”

This October 5th, in honor of International Teacher’s Day, we will release the video on our website and social media.
