Reading Fair at Fabretto Center in Acahualinca.

On International Literacy Day 2015, Fabretto joins the UN to celebrate the importance of literacy as a key driver for sustainable development.

Fabretto empowers underserved children in Nicaragua through quality education, starting as early as possible to help them reach a better future. At Fabretto Education Centers, children and their families participate in engaging and fun activities, which promote reading comprehension. This month, Fabretto Education Center in Acahualinca organized a community reading fair: ‘‘Reading is Fun!’’ Initiatives like this one have a great impact in this community, where 20% of people over the age of 6 cannot read or write.

The reading fair promoted storytelling and story dramatization. Fabretto teachers motivated students to build their very own stories, using the art of painting as inspiration. All of these activities were carried out in order to help children foster the love of reading. While the average Nicaraguan public school day averages just 4 hours long, Fabretto student beneficiaries in Acahualinca participate in meaningful activities in the afternoon.

Fabretto recognizes literacy as a prerequisite to expand student knowledge in at-risk Nicaraguan communities like Acahualinca. Through literacy, children and youth are able to learn, reach their full potential, and take advantage of future opportunities.
