Hurricane Relief: Phase I Complete

BY: Fabretto

A few months ago, we shared a preliminary report of Fabretto’s relief efforts following the catastrophic arrival of hurricanes Eta and Iota. Your immediate and overwhelming support meant we could start responding to the emergency quickly and efficiently. Since November, our efforts to support the communities affected by the hurricanes have not subsided and we are pleased to announce that we have completed Phase I of our hurricane relief response. Read more to learn how your support has already made a lasting impact.

The Need

Last November, Hurricane Eta left close to 2,000 homes destroyed and another 8,000 partially damaged in Nicaragua. Just days later, Hurricane Iota resulted in tens of thousands of people being evacuated from their homes and over 50,000 people facing lack of access to clean drinking water. As flooding and landslides affected some of the most impoverished communities in Nicaragua, many families lost their harvest of basic grains, which sustain the family economy and household food security. Rebuilding homes, damaged infrastructure, and crops will take many months, if not years. Similarly, significant efforts will be required to ensure food security in 2021.

The Response

$110,000+
invested in hurricane relief

100,000+ pounds of food
distributed to more than 1,900 families and to temporary shelters in the first few days after Hurricane Iota hit

1,986 food & hygiene kits
distributed to communities in Madriz, Nueva Segovia, Jinotega, Rivas, and the Caribbean

7,200 liters of purified water
distributed in Rivas and the Caribbean

In addition, Fabretto’s response to the lack of access to clean drinking water included partnering with P&G to distribute water purification kits, helping equip the community of Sulatin, RACCS with a working water purification system, and providing the Roberto Clemente Clinic in Tola, Rivas with new filters to provide potable water to the community.

What’s next?

Fabretto will continue to support communities during the medium-term rebuilding phase. Loss of crops is an urgent problem that will affect food security and economic prosperity in these already vulnerable communities as we move on to Phase II.
