Fundacion Telefonica and Fabretto come together to empower rural entrepeneurs

BY: Virginia Daboub

Thanks to Fundacion Telefonica , 60 students  from the Fabretto program Educacion Secundaria RURAL (SAT) benefited from an employment and entrepreneurship program. The students, from San Isidro de Bolas, dedicated nearly 4 months to entrepreneurship, learning about business management, marketing, sales costs, and finance.  This wonderful experience helps instill Fabretto’s learning method; which adapts to the real life situation of the rural areas.

During the formation period, 10 small business models surged.  A barber shop, cel phone repair service, and a pig farm were among the ideas.  All 10 models were developed in accordance to the business plan that were proposed.  The business plan had to forecast the financial earnings of the model and included details, such as design and marketing strategies.

Projects designed by the students.

The Educación Secundaria Rural (SAT) project concluded at the small business fair held by Central American University (UCA) in Managua.  Participants of the fair included the students of the Fabretto project, as well as other students from different schools throughout the country and organization, such as the national police force.  At the fair, the young students presented their business models alongside their collegiate peers. During the award ceremony, three of Educación Secundaria Rural (SAT) students received special honorable mentions for their “Vive tu Mundo con Lácteos – PROLACT” (Live your Life with Lactose – PROLACT). Roxana Escobar Flores, Diana Pamela Alvarez and Nancy Juárez Maltez, whose small business model consisted of selling milk, cheese and yogurt, are considering actually implementing the idea in their community.

Through the Educación Secundaria Rural (SAT) project and with the support of Fundación Teléfonica, more students have a chance to reach their potential and in turn, better their quality of living moving forward.  For this reason, the Fabretto’s Educación Secundaria Rural (SAT) project promotes entrepreneurial development adapted to the realities and hardship of rural living.  Only programs like this can help empower youth through quality education, and give them the ability to transform their future and break the cycle of poverty plagued throughout Nicaragua.

“We are truly grateful for the opportunity that Fundación Telefónica gave to our SAT students.  It is through these initiatives that our young learners get a chance to understand the workings behind entrepreneurial development.  This experience can directly improve the lives of the students and their families,” expressed Ramón Montalvan, director of Fabretto’s Education Center in San Isidro de Bolas.
