Ever overcomes adversity with a desire for education

BY: Meg Canale

Ever sits across from me in his wheel chair in the second-story of the recently constructed Rural Secondary Education (SAT) Program building in Las Sabanas. He tells me, “I want to keep studying. People have told me it’s impossible. I’ve very proud of what I’ve already accomplished.” Ever is paralyzed and saw a brighter future through education.

Dreaming of graduating from university, Ever needed to find a scholarship. With the help of a sponsor through Fabretto, Ever was set to begin his studies. He had to travel every Saturday to a city over an hour away by bus. He had to ask others, sometimes strangers, to help him on the board and exit. “It was very difficult… very difficult to be able to go to class. And on top of that, the classes were difficult, too!” He focused on his studies and graduated with a degree in Business Administration.  “I focused so deeply in my classes, I didn’t have time to learn a lot about computers,” he said during a break from computer class in Fabretto’s Las Sabanas Center. Focused and motivated, Ever’s goal is to work in office administration once he finishes these classes.

“I know others look up to me,” he said, “if I can do it, it’s an inspiration to younger students, both with and without disabilities.” Ever was a SAT student, participating in 4-H as well. He also organizes a soccer league with younger students, where he coaches and trains them. He’s looking for a way to formalize the league in the surrounding communities. As we watch Ever lead, it’s clear to see that his drive coupled with education will continue to inspire those around him. He’s very thankful to have the support of his family, friends, community, and Fabretto do achieve his goals.
