Because She Gives Everything: Mother’s Day

BY: Anina Hewey

This year, Fabretto is celebrating Mother’s Day by honoring the incredible support that Nicaraguan mothers give to their children to help them reach a better future. Being a mother in Nicaragua isn’t easy, especially for women who live in poverty. Thousands of families live in female-headed homes. Many are single mothers, and some have no support from other family members, but all have one thing in common: they sacrifice everything for their children.

Working mothers must balance supporting their household with a full day of work. Imagine waking up at four in the morning to get children ready for class by 7, cook breakfast, clean the house, sweep the porch, wash clothes by hand – all before leaving for work in the morning. For their children, mothers must be teachers, doctors, psychologists, chefs, counselors, playmates, friends. In short – they give their all.

Nevertheless, mothers who live in the communities that we serve – the most underserved communities, where families live in extreme poverty – often cannot cover all of the costs of education for their children. With no basic school supplies (pencils, notebooks, etc.), children may be forced to drop out of school.

Celebrate Mother’s Day in a different way this year. Honor the work that Nicaraguan mothers do each day by filling the gap and giving school supplies to help her to best support her children. With just $20, you can provide one child with school supplies for the year. Click here to Give Now.
