9-4-25 | Our Programs Trips
I am thrilled to share with you a glimpse of my recent visit to Honduras. During this trip, I could feel the power of partnerships that fuels our mission.
Over the ten-day journey, I was moved both by the exciting work happening alongside our partners – and struck by the great needs that remain. I’m happy to report that Fabretto’s work continues to expand and deepen in the hopes of meeting some of those needs, alongside our partners, donors, and friends.
In the spirit of Padre Fabretto, we strive to support children in isolated, underserved, and often rural communities. In Honduras, an estimated 250,000 children of primary age are out of school, and just 36% of students complete secondary school.
A few highlights:
“Comunidad Fabretto” Partner Gathering:
The trip kicked off in the best way possible – with an energizing gathering of 30 individuals, from ten of our impact partners and Fabretto’s team, in beautiful Santa Rosa de Copan. The event offered a workshop for our partners on communicating social impact led by longtime friend Miguel Tello. Partner organization staff connected not only with Fabretto’s team, but also with each other. I am inspired to see the “Comunidad Fabretto” network grow and deepen our collaborations. I left deeply grateful for our partners’ trust in Fabretto and commitment to working together to transform Central American communities.
Digital Innovation for Agriculture in Motion:
I was excited to witness the community enthusiasm at this new program offering. This new Fabretto initiative emerged from a local need that links to a global challenge – the European Union now requires exported products – including coffee – to demonstrate that production did not contribute to deforestation. This means that farmers must georeference their farms, but for smallholder farmers without tech skills, this can be a barrier to accessing markets. With support from the International Center for Tropical Agriculture – CIAT, we’ve designed a training module using our CaTec methodology to equip youth with digital skills so that they can provide services to farmers in their coffee communities. Our module is youth-friendly and based on hands-on learning, while also raising awareness about inclusion of smallholder farms in the global market.
Coffee and Education
I had the pleasure of joining Alejandro Martinez, Director of our partner BAYAN, and Jose Rodriguez, General Manager of CAPUCAS Coffee Cooperative to sign an agreement to work together to promote access to education and training for youth in Copan, Honduras. We’re excited to continue growing this partnership and increase vital access to education in rural communities, where most Hondurans do not have access to high school.
Friends of Fabretto Travel Companions
I was excited to be joined by three Spanish colleagues – Silvia Larumbe, the director of Fundacion Fabretto in Spain, and Alberto and Concha, two dedicated Board members for the Spanish arm of Fabretto. (You may recognize Alberto as a star marathon runner, who has frequently run for Fabretto!) We were also joined by Will Dowler, who had spent several months volunteering in Nicaragua with Canterbury School and then as an individual volunteer, and his cousin, Nicole, who was just learning about Fabretto’s work for the first time.
We are thrilled to be welcoming visitors and volunteers in Honduras and Guatemala. Stay tuned for more information coming soon about the Friends of Fabretto 2026 trip – and please don’t hesitate to get in touch directly with me or Chrissy if you’re interested in visiting.
