Transforming Rural Futures: How CaTec Is Changing Lives in Honduras

BY: Erick Calix

This blog was written by Erick Calix, who is from Comayagua, Honduras and has worked on projects with both E2E and Fabretto.

In the remote mountains and far-flung communities of Honduras—places where secondary education once felt like a distant dream—something remarkable is happening. Thanks to the CaTec (Youth Technical Training) programs, led by the Fabretto Children’s Foundation and implemented by impact partner Educate2Envision International (E2E), young people are writing new stories of opportunity, growth, and local change.

In this blog, I share more about E2E’s mission and how Fabretto is collaborating with E2E to continue creating opportunities for rural youth.

From One Volunteer to a National Movement

E2E began with a simple but powerful insight: rural youth in Honduras were being left behind. Most couldn’t study beyond sixth grade. Secondary school meant walking up to four hours daily, facing unaffordable costs, and being overlooked by an education system that didn’t see them as a priority.

What started as a volunteer trip by Katia Gómez, E2E’s founder, quickly turned into a mission-driven nonprofit organization determined to change that reality. The goal? To invest in rural youth through education, leadership, and real economic opportunities—right where they live.

Today, E2E brings access to secondary education to hundreds of youth across 4 departments of Honduras and continues to steadily grow its reach each year.

CaTec: Learning That Stays Local and Makes an Impact

CaTec is not your typical education program. Designed to meet the specific needs of rural communities, it offers hands-on training in:

  • Sustainable agriculture
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Technology
  • Community leadership

More than just theory, CaTec gives students practical tools to transform their lives and their communities. It helps teens stay in school—and stay in their communities—as leaders, changemakers, and small-scale entrepreneurs.

By combining technical skills with a local focus, CaTec moves beyond the classroom to support real-life impact and long-term empowerment.

Stronger Together: E2E and Fabretto

The partnership between E2E and Fabretto has been a game-changer. This collaboration combines Fabretto’s more than six decades of experience in education in Central America and methodologies, with E2E’s deep connections in Honduran communities and commitment to education access in the hardest-to-reach rural areas.

Together, we’ve been able to:
  • Offer the CaTec training program to youth in new rural communities
  • Train and support more local facilitators
  • Improve access to learning materials and resources
  • Build systems for tracking success and long-term sustainability

This collaboration is rooted in a shared belief: that youth leadership is the key to lasting change, especially when solutions are designed locally. As of 2025, the CaTec program enrolls 116 youth in communities served by E2E.

What Change Looks Like on the Ground

We see CaTec’s impact in the most powerful ways in the communities where E2E and Fabretto are working:

  • In the student now growing crops sustainably to feed his family
  • In the young woman starting her own rural business
  • In a village that now sees its youth as a source of strength—not something to export

This is what happens when education is built with the community, not imposed on it. When local knowledge is respected. And when young people are trusted to lead.

Beyond the Numbers: A Story of Hope

At its core, CaTec proves that education tailored to real life can unlock potential in even the most underserved areas. The work of E2E and Fabretto isn’t just changing statistics—it’s changing lives.

When we give rural youth the tools to succeed where they are, we don’t just help individuals, we strengthen entire communities.
