Food Security: Gardens

BY: Anina Hewey

Gardens are simple yet powerful tools for sustainable change. In 2013, in collaboration with the USDA’s Food for Education project, Fabretto and partner organizations Food for the Poor and ANF have established 185 school gardens. To ensure the program’s success, we provide each school community with training, seeds, and tools as well as technical support.

To build community nutritional knowledge, we involve parents in every aspect of the nutrition program: cooking daily school meals, tending school gardens alongside their children, and participating in workshops. This year, with knowledge and skills gained through our programs, families in our programs planted 75 home gardens, which benefit family economy, health, and nutrition.
