Let’s spring into action this Spring for girls’ education! We’re launching a fundraising campaign for a vital project: building a much-needed dining hall at a remote school in Guatemala along with our partner, Ak’ Tenamit.
THE NEED
In Guatemala, fewer than 10% of indigenous girls finish high school, and over 50% have children before the age of 20. We’re working alongside our partner, Ak’ Tenamit, to strengthen opportunities for education and holistic development for indigenous girls, to give them the power of self-determination, and to help them access opportunities.
THE SOLUTION
Ak’ Tenamit’s school in Guatemala’s rural Rio Dulce region has 365 girls enrolled this year as boarding students. The girls come from more than 100 rural communities and most are the first in their family’s history to attend school beyond the sixth grade.
As demand for enrollment has increased, the students urgently need a new space in which to eat three meals a day. The building will also be used as a study hall and recreation center. This project will ensure that girls have everything they need to feel comfortable, safe, and supported in their education.
