A Plate that Feeds Dreams: The Story Behind the School Lunch

BY: Wendy Gámez

It’s lunchtime at a rural school in Guatemala. Amid the laughter and lively voices of children, Génesis carefully takes her seat in front of her steaming plate. The familiar aroma—rice, vegetables, and a touch of flavor she loves—rises gently. She eats happily, unaware that this everyday meal represents the collective work of many people and institutions who believe in her future.

In Guatemala, more than 46% of children under the age of five suffer from chronic malnutrition. This reality affects their growth, their ability to learn, and their opportunities to thrive. But thanks to partnerships like those among the Seeds for Progress Foundation, Fabretto Children’s Foundation, and Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), hundreds of students like Génesis can enjoy a nutritious meal at school each day.

A Shared Effort

Public schools in Guatemala follow official menus issued by the Ministry of Education, designed to ensure a balanced diet. However, in the communities where Seeds for Progress works, these menus have been adapted with the support of Fabretto to include MannaPack, a fortified food produced by Feed My Starving Children that provides essential vitamins, minerals, and proteins to combat malnutrition.

Local cooks have learned to incorporate MannaPack with creativity and care. Drawing on their knowledge of traditional cuisine, they blend it with fresh local ingredients like corn, beans, or vegetables, preparing dishes that children recognize and love. In this way, MannaPack becomes more than a nutritional supplement—it becomes part of a meal full of flavor, culture, and heart.

The impact of this collaborative work is also reflected in regional results. By the mid 2025,, MannaPack Meals  had been delivered in 110 communities across Honduras and Guatemala, thanks to joint efforts with 9 partners. Altogether, the nutrition program reached more than 17,000  people and provided more than 2 million  servings.

More Than a Meal, an Opportunity

Behind every smiling child enjoying lunch, there is a chain of solidarity: the donors who support FMSC, the Seeds for Progress teams who accompany schools, and Fabretto’s ongoing work to ensure that nutrition and education go hand in hand.

Each plate served in these schools represents far more than food: it is an investment in the learning, health, and future of children in Guatemala.

Because when a child is well nourished, they learn better. And when they learn better, they can dream bigger.
