A Journey of Connection: Our First Trip to Honduras

BY: Wendy Gámez

A few weeks ago, we; Wendy, Fabretto’s Marketing Coordinator, and Chrissy, U.S. Director of Development, met for the first time. After working together across time zones and Zoom calls, we finally connected in person… not in an office or coffee shop, but in the hills of rural Honduras.

This wasn’t just our first time meeting face-to-face, it was also our first visit to Fabretto’s programs in Honduras. As part of the Communications and Development team, our goal was to meet our local partners firsthand and gather stories and visuals to bring Fabretto’s work to life for our supporters. But what we experienced far exceeded any professional expectations. This trip became deeply personal, an opportunity to see, feel, and understand the depth of Fabretto’s impact in places the world often overlooks.

The Road Less Traveled

Traveling through rural Honduras means long hours on the road. Winding through mountains, navigating potholes, and pushing through slow, bumpy rides. More than 60% of Honduras’ paved roads are deteriorating, and 80% of unpaved ones are nearly impassable during the rainy season. These conditions aren’t just inconvenient; they’re barriers. Barriers to education, to healthcare, to opportunity.

It became clear that in these communities, physical isolation translates to limited access, especially for young people. It’s what makes the work of Fabretto and our partners not just important, but essential.

Witnessing Hope in Action

We visited several communities: La Sampedrana, Tres Pinos, El Rifle, Guachipilín, Santa Elena, and Cascabeles. Each one showed us a different side of what it means to bring education and opportunity to remote areas.

One of the most moving moments was seeing the CaTec program in action. In some communities, formal education is only offered a few days a week. But at CaTec, youth arrive consistently, sometimes walking miles, to access hands-on learning, mentorship, and encouragement. For many, CaTec is the heart of their educational journey. It’s where they feel seen, supported, and inspired to dream beyond their circumstances. CaTec is a Fabretto Youth Empowerment program. Read more about the program here.

We also saw just how committed our partners are to walking alongside these communities. They aren’t just delivering services. They’re building relationships, showing up every day, and serving as a steady presence in areas where options are scarce. In many of the communities we visited, Fabretto’s presence is the only consistent educational support young people receive. That’s both humbling and incredibly motivating.

More Than a Trip

For both of us, this trip wasn’t just about capturing stories. It was about becoming part of one. It reminded us why we do this work and who we do it for. It strengthened our connection to the mission, to our colleagues, and to each other.

We left Honduras with dusty shoes, full hearts, and a deeper conviction that even in the most remote corners of the world, education has the power to change lives.

And we’re so honored to share those stories with you.
