Rural Secondary Education (SAT)

Fabretto recognizes access to secondary education as a human right. In 2007, Fabretto launched an innovative secondary education program called SAT (Tutorial Learning System) in remote rural communities. SAT was designed by the Colombian institution FUNDAEC (Foundation for the Application and Teaching of Sciences). The six pillars of the SAT curriculum include mathematics, natural sciences, literature, language and communication, agricultural technology, and community service. Through SAT, students learn to identify economic opportunities in their communities and to develop small business initiatives through cooperatives, student alliances, or individual initiatives. Fabretto is the only organization in Nicaragua offering the Tutorial Learning System (SAT), an alternative secondary education program, endorsed by the Ministry of Education since 2007.

SATec (Tutorial and Technical Learning System) is an alternative technical labor training program that consists of an abbreviated model derived from the SAT methodology in terms of its philosophical and methodological approach. The program consists of different courses with an average duration of 140 hours and with a training plan composed of educational materials taken from the SAT Program, in addition to manuals focusing on a specific productive initiative (for example, basic grains, beekeeping, or production of minor species). Through participation in SATec, youth develop technical skills relevant to the socio-economic reality and the productive potential of their rural communities, as well as skills in communication, coexistence, entrepreneurship, and community service. The graduates of SATec courses are certified by the National Technological Institute (INATEC) of Nicaragua and by Fabretto.

Program Initiatives:

• Quality secondary education in rural communities following a methodology focused on “Research – Action – Reflection,” which facilitates a contextualized practical learning oriented to “Learning by Doing” and “Learning by Earning.”
• Specific technical training according to the productive potential of rural areas. Training modules include the breeding of minor species, management of sustainable farms, coffee production, management of basic grains, and beekeeping, among others.
• Community development through the participation of youth organized in 4H clubs. These clubs carry out community service activities, for example, through clean-up days, reforestation, road maintenance, dance classes, motivational talks, workshops to raise awareness about climate change, etc.
• Continuous training of tutors in the SAT methodology.
• Promotion of activities to promote youth entrepreneurship.
• Training for the implementation and financial management of productive initiatives.
• Online training through the Fabretto Virtual Classroom, as well as the integration of technology in Fabretto’s secondary education and technical training programs.
• Student exchanges and internships with local companies, as well as community fairs that promote small student businesses, helping them to generate income.
