Reflecting a Better Future for Nicaraguan Families

BY: Jessie Ampié

In Lidia and Alexander’s house, every day, the day begins at four in the morning and ends at ten at night. The last thing they do is leave prepared the meat that in the early morning will become tasty enchiladas that they will sell in their cafe, located at the Jesus of Nazareth School in the department of Chinandega.

In this family of five, everyone helps. They have consolidated the distribution of work in the home and the shared responsibilities of what they have learned in the workshops focused on new masculinity, gender, and training in the establishment of community banks that the Nourishing the Future project has provided them.

“We are both happy to go to the workshops. They have taught us the importance of saving, of keeping accounts, of improving communication at home, the importance of contributing equally to the household chores and managing our time as best as possible, in addition to practicing self-care,” says Lidia.

Lidia and Alexander have been together for 22 years. Alexander was a farmer and Lidia was dedicated exclusively to household chores. After getting sick with asthma, Alejandro had to abandon farming and between them, they began to take care of household chores and expenses.

With the project’s support, they have learned to make work plans, calculate the investment and profit of their business, and give value to the work that each member of the household does. In addition, the couple’s two younger children benefit from access to school supplies and the supplementary school meal.

Like Lidia, Alejandro, and their children, there are thousands of Nicaraguan families waiting for support to transform their day-to-day lives and to have a better reflection of their lives in the future. Your support is valuable in contributing to their future.
