With posters and cheers, Fabretto staff and volunteers welcomed athletics director of John Burroughs High School (St. Louis, Missouri), Peter Tasker, to Managua. On Sunday, Peter began the challenge of crossing Nicaragua, from Peñas Blancas in Nicaragua’s southern border with Costa Rica, to Cusmapa in the northern border with Honduras. His mission is to raise funds for Fabretto Children’s Foundation. Tasker intends to complete this extreme challenge of roughly 300 miles in just three weeks’ time. He hopes to become the first North American from Missouri to run all of Nicaragua from South to North.

“I asked myself: In what way can I involve the community of John Burroughs High School to support the children of Fabretto? And almost immediately the idea of running through Nicaragua in a few short weeks was born. The 300 mile challenge seems fair and a great way to raise money for and awareness of the magnificent work Fabretto does,” explains Tasker.

At the age of 56, Tasker is aware of the great challenge the run imposes on his health but knows that Nicaraguan children need his support. Today, the athletics director passed through Fabretto Headquarters and the Education Center in Acahualinca, Managua, where children received him with hugs – some even ran with him for a few blocks to show their appreciation! Tasker’s journey will culminate on June 27th in the town of San José de Cusmapa, which was founded by Father Rafael Maria Fabretto (1920-1990).

It is truly admirable and exemplary what Peter is willing to do for the children. People like him inspire us to continue doing our job every day. To date, Tasker has raised more than $15,000, which will go towards ensuring that children in Nicaragua have access to quality education and nutrition.
