In 2009-2010, Mike Zelek volunteered in Cusmapa with Fabretto, where he taught classes and supported children with special health needs. As he reached out to the community, he found Gabriel, a child in critical condition due to severe malnourishment. With support from Mike and Fabretto, Gabriel received nutritional supplements and was placed with an adoptive family.
In December 2013, volunteers Genís and Kait visited Cusmapa to follow up on Gabriel’s progress. This film tells the story of Gabriel’s journey and the impact that Fabretto volunteers can have to truly change a child’s life.

On volunteering with Fabretto, Mike reflected:
“Volunteers can have a tremendous impact on Fabretto’s work. The important thing for volunteers is to go in with a humble and selfless attitude, and work as closely with local staff as much as possible to fulfill Fabretto’s mission. Ultimately, it is these partnerships that create success.
The most valuable part was having the opportunity to learn from so many wonderful people. I grew a lot through the people I knew and the experiences, both fun and challenging, I had. These people and experiences have shaped me in many ways, and I am grateful for the opportunities Fabretto offered me as a volunteer.
Volunteering with Fabretto was a great experience for me. It was not always easy, but it was incredibly worthwhile. When I went back in December, after having been gone over three years, it felt like I had been gone for a weekend. Cusmapa still feels like home, and I hope to continue to visit and remain involved with Fabretto’s work in the years to come.”
Thank you, Mike, for your service to children in need in Nicaragua!
