Each of our five Fabretto centers boasts a PC computer lab so that the students have access to basic computer applications skills. Amazingly, even at the most remote location, Quebrada Honda, internet connectivity is available through a satellite connection. Also, Fabretto has one of the few Mac labs in the country at our Esteli center's new school building. The outfitting and upgrades of these facilities would not be possible without in-kind donations of used computers, desks and office equipment primarily from the National Geographic Society.
The focus for our younger students is on developing their typing skills and teaching them to manage basic data and become familiar with the internet and basic desktop applications. Meanwhile, our middle and high school students are learning more sophisticated applications such as Introduction to Informatics, Windows XP, and Office XP. These classes are designed to broaden the students’ skill base and provide further job opportunities once they graduate.
It is a fact that now, more than ever, third world societies require skilled workers in order to attract foreign investment to help develop their local economies. This is especially true in Nicaragua, where an ever growing demand for IT trained personnel is being felt in every sector of the economy. Fabretto is working diligently to give our interested students the opportunity to partake in this growing job market. In this context, we are also implementing courses for the students in the following areas:
 |
- Programming skills
- Server administration
- Computer maintenance and repair
|
Fabretto’s centers are located in areas where there are no other IT technical schools, or where the cost of attending the few existing schools in adjacent areas is so high that it is
impossible for the low-income families we serve to send their children. As with so many of our program offerings, these courses will open a door of opportunity for our students to learn a valuable and highly marketable trade.
In addition, we plan to develop a career counseling program which will connect our upcoming graduates with new and existing employers seeking these skilled workers.
